How to process wood: The purpose of wood processing is to increase the durability of wood. The use of wood preservatives protects against decay and various pests and enhances the durability of wood. Preservatives that are used to preserve the wood are called preservatives.
How to process wood
Wood processing can be done in 6 ways that are described as follows-
1. Soaking in creosote oil
Creosote oil is a pungent and pesticide. It can easily prevent wood rot. Applying this oil on the surface of the wood with the help of a brush or soaking the wood in hot oil is quite helpful in preventing the attack of insects and spiders. Wood is very long-lasting when this oil is applied. Usually, railway slippers, electrical and telegraph poles can be processed in this manner.
2. Tar coating/coal tar
It is a type of wood preservative. Applying two to four coats of tar to a wood brush or cloth creates a coating easily so that insects can no longer attack. Tar is usually used on house fences, wooden poles, and boats.
3. Charing
It is better to burn the part of the wooden pole that is under the ground. This process protects against the attack of insects and spiders. It is better to burn a piece of wood about 12 millimeters (1/2 inch) thick.
4. Taring
You can protect the wood from insects by applying kerosene or tar oil on the wood.
5. Watering
If the wood is completely soaked in running water for some time, the wood caterpillar cells’ juice comes out. As a result, the insects no longer attack.
6. Applying paint or varnish/coating
In different countries, preservative paints are made and coated on wood. Insects attack wood. Wooden doors-windows or cheap furniture can be preserved by applying linseed oil in different colors and varnish made by a spirit in valuable furniture. The use of paint and varnish not only enhances the beauty but also protects the wood from insects.
Importance of wood processing
This preservative is applied to the wood or inside the wood to preserve the wood. Wood needs to be well seasoned before using wood preservatives. Wood preservatives should not be applied without partial or seasoning. Applying a coating on sap or moist wood closes the wood cells’ pores but does not allow the juice and moisture inside the wood to escape. As a result, fungus grows on the wood, and it causes a lot of damage to the wood.
Wood Processing Materials
There are different types of wood processing materials available in the market. The following three types of products are more common among them.
- Preservative Tar Oil
- Water Soluble Chemical Salt
- Toxic Organic Compound
Preservative tar oil:
The most used and almost ubiquitous preservative tar oil in wood processing is creosote. There are three types of oil, namely-
- Cole Tar Creosote
- Water Gas Tar Creosote
- Wood Tar Creosote
Cole tar creosote: The three types of creosotes mentioned are produced from coal, tar, and wood, respectively. Coal tar creosote is the most widely used and the most efficient in wood processing. The main advantage of creosote is that they are not soluble in water. Creosote is not used for interior woodworking due to its pungent odor.
Water-soluble chemical salts:
Among such chemical salts, zinc chloride and potassium dichromate mixed zinc chloride are most commonly used. Magnesium silicofluoride, sodium fluoride, copper sulfate, arsenic copper sulfate, sulfuric chloride, etc., are also used in wood processing. After applying these solutions, the wood has to be re-dried. These are odorless, so do not harm the paint or varnish in any way. They are widely used in wooden furniture and fancy items.
Toxic organic compound:
In wood processing, extracts of oil or spirit are dissolved with tetrachlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, copper naphthenate, zinc naphthenate, etc. When this solution is applied to the wood’s surface, the herbal liquid evaporates, and the toxic chemicals remain on the surface of the wood. As a result, the wood cannot be attacked by fungi and insects. It has no pungent odor and wood surface can be easily painted after application.
Qualities of wood processing materials
- Wood processing materials should have the following qualities-
- The price will be low.
- It will be easily and safely applicable.
- Wood will not be harmful to the cytoskeleton
- Will last on wood and will not wash in water.
- Do not burn easily in fire.
- can penetrate deep into the wood.
- It will be aesthetic and will not ruin the coating used in the materials.
