Wood screws: Types, Sizes, and Uses

Types of wood screws and their sizes and uses: Screws or nails are commonly used to attach or fasten wood. You can get good results by using wood glue before giving any pair of wood. Screws, nails are used to attach wood to wood or other things (hinges, plywood, etc.) to wood. Parts of a screw

The screw has three main parts, e.g.

Head: It is the top of a screw. The shape of the head of the screw varies for the convenience of the work. A screw is named according to the head’s shape, such as a round head screw, flat head screw, star head screw. Most screw heads have grooves. A screwdriver is inserted in the groove to open or attach the screw.

Shank: It is the part just below the head of a screw, i.e., the smooth part, i.e., not patched. An instrument called a gauge meter is used to measure the diameter of a shank. Gauge meters have grooves of different sizes from 00 to 24. So, the screw’s size is determined by inserting the screw in that groove, and it is called the gauge number of the screw. The diameter of a screw depends on this gauge number. In this way, you can measure screw size. The higher the gauge number, the larger or thicker the shank’s diameter and the thicker the screw.

Threaded portion: The bottom of the shank where the groove or thread is attached is called the threaded portion. This punch part of the screw helps to hold the wood together with various things.

Types of wood screws

There are generally five types of wood screws available on the market. E.g.

Size: They range in size and diameter from 8 mm to 75 mm (1/4 “to 3”).

Use: It is used in special work of wood, in electronics, making car pills, etc.

Round Phillips Head Screw: 

All of these screws have round heads, and the head of this screw has a cross and star-shaped groove. A screwdriver or Phillips screwdriver is used for attaching this screw. It is made of steel, copper, brass, aluminum, etc. It is also often made of galvanized steel.

Size: They range in size and diameter from 8 mm to 75 mm (1″/4 to 3″).

Uses: These screws are used to make car bodies, electronics, wood, and other products.

Roundhead screw: 

The upper part of the head of these screws is semi-circular, and the lower part is flat. It is made of copper, steel, brass, etc.

Uses: Round head screw is used in plywood work where it is not possible to use countersunk screws. This screw is also used in metalwork and woodwork.

Countersunk screw: 

These screws are usually inserted counter to the flat wood. It is made of steel, copper, brass, etc.

Size: It varies in diameter from 6.5 mm to 150 mm (1/4 “to 6”).

Uses: Used in chairs, tables, boxes, locks, doors, etc. Moreover, it is used in all the places where the wooden floor’s head should be kept flat.

Oval head screw: 

The screw head is the countersunk and round head screw. It is like a round head screw; another name for this screw is the raged head screw.

Special purposes screws

Double head screw: 

All of these screws have threads on both ends and are shank-like in between. It is used in places where it is impossible to use ordinary screws.

Oval fillister head screws:

Squarehead screw:

Hex head screw: 

It is also called a coach screw or lag bolt. Its head is curved and looks almost like a square head screw. It is made of mild steel. A wrench is used instead of the screwdriver to insert these screws. It is used in very strong work.

Size: These screws are usually 25 mm to 400 mm (1 “to 16″) in different diameters and lengths. Diameters typically range from 8 mm to 25 mm (1/4″ to 1”).

Uses: Used in very powerful work, such as the construction of bridges, construction of car bodies, construction of various big gates.

Hanger bolt: 

All these screws have threads cut on their heads, and nuts are attached to these threads. Especially, these nuts and screws are fastened with holes in the two ends of the wood. It is made of steel.

Size and use: It is available in different sizes like a square screw and head screw and used in different work types.

Screw eye: The screws are made of steel, copper, brass, etc. It can usually be used to hang something, such as to hang or hang a picture. It comes in different sizes. It looks like a ring on one side and threaded on the other.

How to buy a screw: 

Usually sold as grouse and packaged in paper boxes. When buying a screw, its size means the length of the screw, the gauge number, the head’s shape, what metal it is made of, etc.

Length of the screw: The countersunk screw’s length is taken from the top of the head to the end of the screw, and the other screw’s length is taken from the bottom of the head, not from the top of the head. It is usually from 8 mm to 160 mm. Is the length up.

Gauge number: The gauge number of the screw is taken according to the diameter of the shank. Gauge numbers range from 0 to 24. The diameter of a screw can be of different types, i.e., 3 to 10 types.
